WR&D conducted an extensive survey of construction managers, architects, developers, and building owners to determine their views on engaging union and non-union contractors on construction projects.
Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation
We helped AAMI develop an international conference for medical device design and manufacturing professionals, "Human Factors, Ergonomics, and Patient Safety for Medical Devices," was held on June 28-30, 2005, in Washington, DC.
We studied the experience of patients served by the hospital's Bethke Cancer Center. Specifically, we conducted patient and staff observations and interviews to develop personas, scenarios, and a list of critical incidents pertaining to the care process. Our findings helped the Center identify ways to further enhance the patient experience.
We conducted collaborative research on the usability of a novel endoscopic instrument (details proprietary). Our core tasks were to observe and document several endoscopic procedures and interview endoscopists and nurses to generate a deeper understanding of their workload and the associated human factors issues.
WR&D helped Gambro conduct use-safety and usability studies of the manufacturer's industry-leading hemodialysis machines that are normally used in critical care settings. The studies led to important enhancements to the machines’ software user interfaces, the development of supplemental on-product warnings, and the development of revised user manual content. Importantly, the work helped Gambro demonstrate the effectiveness of their Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) program.
We designed the touchscreen-based user interface for Hill-Rom’s flagship hospital bed – TotalCare Connect. Hill-Rom states, "TotalCare® Connect bed is exceptionally easy to use. Clean, simple controls and a large, colorful touchscreen on the siderails give caregivers the power of touch at the point of care, especially effective during wound care management." The bed is capable of weighing patients, delivering percussive respiratory therapy, alerting nurses if a patients sits up and attempts to exit the bed, and many more features that enhance patient safety and make work life easier for care providers.
U.S. Food & Drug Administration - Center for Devices and Radiological Health
Michael Wiklund is serving as the co-editor and contributor to a new handbook on human factors in medical device design. He is authoring chapters on Workstation Design and Software User Interface Design. Each chapter contains numerous detailed guidelines that will help medical device developers produce safe, ergonomic, and usable solutions. The FDA has already authorized the authors to adapt the technical content for publication by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, a leading publisher of human factors-related titles.
WR&D helped Zeo refine the user interfaces to a consumer device called the Zeo Personal Sleep Coach that helps users analyze and improve their sleep patterns. Our work included critiquing the device’s and accompanying website’s user interfaces and recommending enhancements, as well as conducting a series of usability tests of prototype devices prior to the market launch. Zeo states that the device, "... is an easy to use sleep education tool and motivational program created to help you understand how you are sleeping."
